May is Tavern Month: Celebrating the social and economic impact of Wisconsin’s bars, taverns and restaurants

The Tavern League of Wisconsin (TLW), along with its 5,000 members, is proud to recognize May as National Tavern Month. The special Tavern Month designation has been an annual tradition since 1953 and provides an opportunity to create awareness about the history, charitable giving, and economic impact of the TLW and its members across the state.

Local taverns, bars and restaurants have a long history in Wisconsin as gathering places for celebrating and commiserating while spending time with friends. TLW members also give significantly to charitable organizations and their businesses contribute to the economic prosperity of the state.

Each year, the TLW Foundation, the charitable arm of TLW, provides financial support for thousands of Wisconsin charities, as well as the Tavern League’s SafeRide program. Funds for the foundation are raised throughout the year, during events hosted by local leagues in every county of Wisconsin. In 2020, the Tavern League of Wisconsin was proud to contribute $10.5 million to support nearly 25,000 charities across the state.

More than 161,000 jobs are generated by the alcohol industry in Wisconsin — that’s an important, positive impact on the economy, with pre-pandemic figures close to $3.2 billion in total annual wages paid, and taxes totaling more than $2.6 billion.

Every member of the TLW lives and works in their community. And they believe in supporting efforts to make their communities even better places to live and work. This May, join the TLW to celebrate Tavern Month by raising a glass in your favorite TLW member tavern, bar or restaurant.
