Tavern League of Wisconsin's 41st Legislative Day Recap
The Tavern League of Wisconsin (TLW) successfully held its 41st Annual State Legislative Day, bringing over 100 members to the Capitol in Madison on Tuesday, February 17. The event's purpose is to engage with elected officials, discuss issues vital to the hospitality industry, and thank them for past support.
The Importance of Annual Legislative Day
Held every late winter or early spring, this annual event ensures state legislators are familiar with the TLW, its members, and the industry's legislative priorities.
- Odd-Numbered Years (Start of Session): Following an election, this is a crucial opportunity to introduce the TLW, members, and their businesses to newly elected officials and outline the TLW’s agenda for the current two-year legislative session.
- Even-Numbered Years (Near End of Session): This event is used to build support for issues that are still actively moving through the legislative process.
Legislative Day provides a valuable opportunity for TLW members to meet their State Representative, State Senator, and their respective staff in person. Building these personal relationships is key:
- It allows members to educate officials on the hospitality industry's significance to their district and the entire state of Wisconsin.
- The ultimate goal is for legislators to view members as trusted resources. When a bill concerning the alcohol or hospitality industry reaches their desk, the first thing they should do is contact their TLW constituent for input. A personal relationship makes it much harder for officials to cast a vote that negatively impacts the industry.
Legislative Session Update
As the current Legislative Session nears its close, the TLW is pleased to report successful efforts in:
- Defeating: Legal and legislative attempts to loosen "Wedding Barn" regulations and a proposal to permit alcohol delivery.
- Ongoing Focus: Working toward appropriate regulation of Hemp/THC products and monitoring related activity at the federal level in Washington.
Upcoming Election Information
The election season is now underway. The Spring Election will take place on April 7th, and the circulation of nomination papers for the General Election begins on April 15th. The TLW will provide regular updates on election-related issues.
